Kozolec

Slovenian news, stacked by hand for the people who left, the people who visit and everyone who misses the place.

The farmhouse

A hayrack for the news

From a kitchen table in Denver to a daily round-up for Slovenes everywhere.

Kozolec started at a kitchen table in Denver. Joe Novak, whose great-grandparents left Bela krajina for the coal mines of southern Colorado, kept forwarding Slovenian articles to cousins and aunts who could no longer read the language. Writing a short English note about the important ones every evening became a habit, then an email newsletter, and in 2026 this website.

Who we write for. Our readers have a foot in two places: second- and third-generation Slovenes in the United States and Canada, Slovenians who moved abroad for work or study, couples in mixed families, and travellers planning a first trip to the Julian Alps, the Karst or the coast. They care about Slovenia but don't follow Slovenian media every day, and they want something calmer and more practical than a stream of headlines.

What we cover. Five racks: culture (stage, screen, books and music), sport (Slovenians on snow, court and road), travel (caves, lakes, coast and tourism figures), science (Slovenian institutes and researchers) and getting around (motorways, rail and roadworks). We deliberately leave out party politics, elections, crime and courts.

How we work. Three writers in Ljubljana, Bled and Maribor follow Slovenian media, institutions and event organisers, choose the stories and write them in plain English. The editor in Colorado checks every story against its sources before it is published. Every story lists those sources, so you can check them yourself. Read more in How we report.

Why the name. A kozolec is the wooden hayrack that stands in Slovenian fields, where hay and grain are hung in rows to dry in the wind. It is one of the country's best-loved pieces of folk architecture. We liked the idea of news gathered by hand, sorted into rows and left out in the open air.

Who publishes it. Kozolec is published by Larch & Hay Publishing LLC, 117 Union Blvd, Denver, CO 80221, USA. It is free to read and is funded by advertising, which is sold separately from the newsroom under our advertising policy. Write to us at editors@kozolecnews.com.
