How we report
Our editorial standards. Every writer at Kozolec works to these rules, and readers can hold us to them.
Last revised 21 October 2026 · Applies to kozolecnews.com
1. What we are for
Kozolec exists to give people who care about Slovenia, but do not follow Slovenian-language media every day, a reliable and readable account of what is happening there. We choose stories that matter in daily life and for visitors: culture, sport, travel, science and transport. We leave out party politics, elections, crime and court cases, which Slovenian media already cover in depth and which need on-the-ground reporting we cannot do from a small newsroom.
2. Sources come first
Every story is based on sources we can name and link: organisers, institutions, research bodies, statistics offices, sports federations and established Slovenian media such as RTV SLO, Delo, Večer, Siol, 24ur and the STA news agency. Sources are listed at the end of each story under “Hung on these sources”, and the small numbers in the text show which source supports which fact.
When we rely on another outlet's reporting, we say so and link to it. We do not copy other publications' text; we read, check and write our own.
3. Checking
A writer reports and signs each story. Before it is published, the editor checks names, spellings, numbers, dates, times and quotes against the sources. Where sources disagree, we say so in the story rather than choose silently. Where something is not yet confirmed, we say that too.
4. Quotes and translation
Most quotes are translated by us from Slovenian. We translate faithfully, keep the speaker's meaning and tone, and do not merge separate remarks into one. When a quote was given to another outlet, we name that outlet.
5. Fairness and independence
We aim to be accurate, fair and calm. We do not accept gifts, free travel or payment from the people and organisations we write about. If a writer has a personal connection to a story, they tell the editor and someone else writes it. Advertising is handled separately, as our advertising policy describes.
6. Pictures
Our pictures are AI-generated illustrations, created from prompts written by our staff. They are always labelled as illustrations and are designed not to show real, identifiable people, logos or events. They are never presented as photographs of what happened.
7. Technology
We use software to check spelling, to help with translation and to make illustrations. A person chooses every story, writes it and checks it; software never publishes anything on its own.
8. Language and names
We keep Slovenian diacritics (č, š, ž) in names and places, use the official English names of institutions where they exist, and explain local words such as kozolec or krompirjeve počitnice the first time they appear.
9. Feedback
If you think we have fallen short of these standards, write to editors@kozolecnews.com. The editor reads every message and answers within two working days.
