Žan Kranjec finished 18th in the opening men's giant slalom of the Alpine Ski World Cup season on the Rettenbach glacier in Sölden on Sunday, 1.59 seconds behind the winner.12

He was only 24th after the morning run, 1.40 seconds off the lead. In the final he set the 13th fastest time and moved up six places. Miha Oserban, the other Slovenian starter, did not make the second run and finished 56th.23

“Better than the result shows”

“If I had put together the better sections of both runs, the result could have been quite good,” Kranjec told TV Slovenija. “I lost too much on the flat in the first run and on the steep in the second. The differences are small. Now I need the confidence to ski every turn the way I know I can.” He added that his equipment was working well.23

The podium

Lucas Pinheiro Braathen of Brazil led after the first run and held on to win by 0.48 seconds from Switzerland's Loïc Meillard, with Marco Odermatt a hundredth further back in third. It was Pinheiro Braathen's second win in Sölden after 2020.14
